In order to be ASE certified, you must have two years of on the job training or one year of on the job training with a two year degree in automotive repair, must complete the ASE training and pass the ASE exam.

It is not easy to obtain the ASE seal as only two out of three test takers pass the exam on the first attempt. The tests questions are written in workshops by a national panel of seasoned automotive industry professionals. To remain ASE certified, it is required to retest every five years to keep up with the rapid changes in the automotive industry.
